Shelley Moore is a Canadian educator, researcher, and speaker whose innovative work in inclusive education has reshaped how teachers and schools approach diversity in classrooms. With a career spanning decades, Shelley has become a leading voice for creating learning environments that celebrate the strengths and contributions of every student, particularly those with disabilities or exceptionalities.Shelley was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, where her early experiences in schools inspired her to question traditional educational practices. She pursued her Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta, specializing in special education. Her time in the classroom ignited a passion for advocating for students often marginalized in conventional systems. This passion led her to Simon Fraser University, where she earned a Master’s degree in Special Education and began exploring strategies to support all learners in inclusive settings. She is currently pursuing her doctoral studies, focusing on systemic change to foster greater inclusion in schools.
At the heart of Shelley’s work is the belief that all students belong together in shared learning spaces. Her approach is rooted in Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework that encourages educators to design lessons accessible to all learners by considering their diverse needs from the outset. Shelley emphasizes that inclusion is not about “fixing” students to fit into traditional models but rather about transforming systems to meet students where they are. This perspective aligns with the social model of disability, which shifts the focus from individual deficits to barriers in the environment.
Shelley’s message has resonated with educators worldwide through her engaging workshops, keynote speeches, and publications. Known for her humor, warmth, and storytelling, she has a unique ability to connect with audiences, making complex concepts both accessible and actionable. Her work highlights the importance of fostering a sense of belonging in classrooms, where every student feels valued and supported.
One of Shelley’s most impactful contributions is her use of metaphors to explain the principles of inclusion. Her widely shared “Bowling Analogy” illustrates how educators can shift their focus from individual deficits to systemic change. Instead of blaming students for “missing the pins,” Shelley encourages teachers to adjust their aim and approach, ensuring the learning environment supports all students in achieving success.
Shelley has authored several resources for educators, including the book One Without the Other: Stories of Unity Through Diversity and Inclusion. In this influential work, she shares real-life examples of how inclusive practices can transform classrooms and communities. The book has become a go-to resource for teachers seeking practical strategies and inspiration for implementing inclusion in their schools.
Shelley’s influence extends beyond individual classrooms. She works closely with school districts, government agencies, and universities to advocate for policy changes that prioritize inclusion. Her research and professional development initiatives focus on helping educators build capacity, shifting mindsets, and fostering collaboration among teachers, families, and communities.
Shelley’s vision for inclusion is not limited to students with disabilities. She emphasizes that inclusive education benefits everyone, creating richer, more dynamic learning environments. By embracing diversity, educators can help all students develop empathy, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.Today, Shelley is a sought-after speaker and consultant, sharing her expertise with educators across Canada and beyond. Whether working with teachers in Prince Albert or presenting at international conferences, her message remains clear: inclusion is not just a teaching strategy—it is a commitment to equity, belonging, and justice in education.
Shelley Moore’s work continues to inspire teachers to reimagine what is possible in their classrooms. Through her dedication to inclusive education, she has empowered countless educators to see the potential in every student and to create schools where diversity is not only accepted but celebrated.
Shelley Moore's Book will be sold at the Convention for $20.
